This year Cannings celebrates its 50th year of operation. We have come a long way from our humble beginnings operating out of a single-fronted terrace unit in Fitzroy. This year we acknowledge the business legacy left by Victor and Rob Canning and plan to acknowledge the auspicious 50 years with various events throughout the year. Visit back again to find out about events as we roll them out.
Cannings No 1 STIHL Dealer in Victoria in 2009.
Cannings Outdoor Power Equipment achieves status of No 1 Victorian Stihl Dealer for turnover in 2009, continuing the Cannings tradition of top-class STIHL promotion and sales performance.
Some key product improvements are being introduced to the Granberg product range in early 2009:
Granberg 12 volt Chainsaw Sharpeners
- 10 degree angle guide added to the height plate (in addition to the existing 30 degree guide), specifically for sharpening ripping chain.
- The addition of multiple depth gauge calibrations for various chain specifications (in addition to the existing .030 setting for regular chain).
Granberg Alaskan MKIII Chainsaw Mills
- After 40 years we are metricating the Alaskan Mill. To date, the Alaskan has been equipped with BSW fittings, (as per the original USA mill), which has become problematic in certain markets which are now wholly metric. All mill production from the beginning of 2009 will feature M8 metric threaded fittings (replacing the existing 5/16″ fasteners) and will be 13mm A/F, making them compatible with most current chainsaw spanners.
John and Stuart Canning visited Papua New Guinea and Singapore in a whirlwind double header over a period of 1 week.
The trip to meet with Stihl – Singapore, the first of hopefully many, where Stuart and John were warmly welcomed and very grateful for the opportunity to meet and show Cannings range of Yale Ropes and Granberg products.
As seen in the photos the milling demonstration went extremely well and the colouration in the wood milled on the day was magnificent.
The objective of the trip to Papua New Guinea was to showcase the Granberg mill at the annual Morobe Show Day in Lae. The Granberg Mill range is being used extensively in Papua New Guinea with strong sales continuing to be seen throughout the region.
The new Stihl chainsaw carry pack was introduced to the market during this trip and it is expected to be a great success in PNG. It offers the ability for loggers to carry their saws into remote areas with ease.
Pictures for both events can be viewed here.
Both Stuart and John thank their hosts in Singapore and Papua New Guinea for the chance to meet and form new relationships and look forward to seeing everyone again on the next visit.

Ball-tearer hand-crafted STIHL MS440 Motorbike
These impressive pics of a “prototype” Stihl motorbike were taken at the International Society of Arborists (ISA) show in Minneapolis, USA in August. We can’t attest to the performance, but the attention to detail is staggering!
